About

Formed in 1994 in Säffle, Sweden, Draconian emerged from the early Scandinavian extreme-metal underground and steadily refined a signature gothic doom/death sound built on slow, weighty riffs and deeply melodic atmosphere. After early demos, the band’s breakthrough came with the 2002 recording of “Dark Oceans We Cry”, which introduced Lisa Johansson’s vocals and directly helped secure a long-term deal with Napalm Records—an alignement that set the stage for their full-length catalogue and international reach. Across multiple eras and vocal lineups, Draconian have become one of the defining names in melodic gothic doom: a band that balances Anders Jacobsson’s harsh, death-tinged presence with expressive clean vocals to create songs that are simultaneously romantic, bleak, and cinematic. Their work is widely recognized for elevating “beauty and the beast” dynamics beyond tope—using contrast, pacing, and orchestral shading to deliver emotionally heavy material that resonates strongly with doom and gothic audiences worldwide. Following their euchre acclaimed previous studio album, “Under A Godless Veil”—often cited as a late-career high point for its expansive scope, polished production, and seamless shifts between crushing doom, gothic elegance, and sharp metal edges—the band marked another major chapter in 2022 by welcoming Lisa Johansson back as Heike Langhans departed. Both vocalists then shared the stage for a special Hellfest performance that symbolically “passed the torch” in front of a global audience. With their new full-length, “In Somnolent Ruin”, out May 8, 2026 via Napalm Records, Draconian lean into a more intimate dreamlike nine-track journey—guided by Anders Jacobsson’s poetic lyricism and the restored vocal interplay of Lisa Johansson returning to share duties once again. Written, recorded, and arranged by Johan Ericson, it carries a distinct live-feeling earned from a lineup touring together since 2022, while also reflecting key shifts: guitarist Niklas Nord adding fresh edge, Daniel Johansson stepping in as full-time drummer, and longtime member Daniel Arvidsson anchoring the low end on bass. Thematically, it circles Plato’s theory of the soul and confronts alienation, numbness, and the search for direction—without losing the band’s trademark otherworldly melody, heavy romantic atmosphere, and catharsis.
